Spring 2006, we were honored to have won 10 awards in Regional Scholastics and three in National Scholastics. One piece received the American Visions Award. On the local level of the Women's Club, 10 of our pieces placed and on the state level, two of our pieces placed. The Art Department at our school was given the opportunity to submit artwork to the Visual Art Exchange, a gallery in downtown Raleigh. Out of the 13 pieces displayed, nine of them were created by NAHS members and two received special honors. The club had 14 pieces showing at the Annual Artsplosure festival in Moore Square. One work received third place, another received first.
The math hall at our school now has a bit of flair thanks to the M.C. Escher inspired mural done by NAHS, sprawling an unbelievable forty feet. Raleigh Urban Renaissance was the theme of this falls Street Painting Festival, in which 8 of our teams competed. Advisors, Michelle Harrell and Jodi Aker received Best Technique.
SRMHS received third place at the North Carolina State Fair. Five out of the six pieces exhibited was the work of NAHS members. We had another member win third place in the Philharmonic art competition.
Our school has collaborated with the North Carolina Museum of Art for the Monet in Normandy Exhibit. Our Advisor, Michelle Harrell, along with our science and French teachers wrote the lessons and workshops for the exhibit. Four members have work on exhibit and three members plein air painted at the museum in accordance to the exhibit for the Teacher Open House and Reception.
We conducted a soup bowl fundraiser to raise money for a New Orleans High School affected by Hurricane Katrina. Dinner with Friends was a huge success, we raised over $900 for the sister school art department to spend in the form of a gift card. We have collected several thousand dollars of supplies. Our NAHS sponsor, Jodi Aker, will meet the Clark High School art teacher in November. Our marching band will visit the school in March and deliver several old marching band uniforms and instruments to the Clark High School marching band.
We hope to continue our accomplishments throughout all fields of artistic study for current SRHS students and for those who will be continuing on in their artistic endeavors.
