SPORTS MEDICINE STUDENT ASSISTANT INFO:

This information will provide you with detailed information about the SRHS Athletic Training / Sports Medicine (ATSM) educational program and the roles of the Sports Medicine Student Assistants (SMSA)

Student Assistants

Student Assistants assist Mr. Hall in preventing, evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating athletic injuries. Students Assistants are a group of highly motivated, responsible, professional, dedicated, and caring students who work together as a cohesive team. Life as an Student Assistant can be very demanding, with Student Assistants working a minimum of eight hours a week after school. Student Assistants are assigned to a SRHS athletic team and are required to be present whenever that team is engaged in an athletic activity, whether practice, game, or conditioning.

Some responsibilities include: 

  • Filling out paperwork such as injury report forms, rehab sheets, etc.
  • Caring for immediate athletic injuries under the supervision of Mr. Hall
  • Rehabilitating athletic injury as well as devising rehabilitative plans.
  • Attendance at all team-related activities

Student Assistants are involved in:

  • Prevention of athletic injuries
  • Recognition, evaluation, and immediate care/treatment of athletic injuries
  • Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries
  • Healthcare administration

Becoming a Student Assistant involves the following procedures:

  • Filling out a short application. (see Forms)
  • Obtaining three reference letters.
  • A short interview with Mr. Hall.
  • Taking, completing, and receiving a "B" or better in the course entitled "ATSM I"   (offered at SRHS)
  • Becoming certified in First Aid, CPR, and Blood Borne Pathogens (offered at SRHS)
  • Having an enthusiastic and "team" player attitude.
  • Reading & reviewing Student Assistants Manual. (see Forms)

Student Assistant Retention Policy

Once admitted into the program, Student Assistants must continue to meet stringent criteria in order to continue working as a Student Assistant. The Criteria is as follows:

  • Maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of  2.5
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Upholding the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and SRHS Codes of Ethics/Conduct.
  • Getting a grade of  "B" or better in ATSM I & II classes.
  • Working a minimum of eight (8) hours a week when assigned a sport.
  • A score of at least 70/100  on each evaluation conducted on the Student Assistant by Mr. Hall (2 evaluations per year)
  • Perform Duties of the Student Assistant to the best of the individual's ability.
  • No class detentions or school suspensions!
