Extracurricular Activities
It takes more than a grade point average to be admitted to college or win scholarships.
Involvement in
clubs and organizations,
athletics and community activities increases a student's likelihood of admission.
Is College in Your Future?
In addition to your academic record, essay, recommendations, and extracurricular activities, colleges also require standardized test scores. You should take the following tests at least once during the junior year.
-
PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) - will be administered to all juniors on
Tuesday, October 15th. Registration is not required, just be in attendance. This is the
only test used to determine if a student qualifies for the National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test. Taking the PSAT will give you practice for the SAT and show which areas
need improvement.
-
SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) - a three hour plus test that measures knowledge in
mathematical and verbal content areas. Registration materials are available in the Guidance
Department and online.
-
ACT (American College Testing) - another college admissions test which covers four
content areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. Registration
materials are available in the Guidance Department and online.
Students may take all the tests as often as you like.
Some resources to help you with your college search are located in the Career Center. They are
college catalogues, College Handbook, Index of College Majors and Graduate Programs, and the
College View program.
Scholarships and
financial aid are available. In most cases no one is going to come looking for you to give you money. You have to do the work to find out what is available and for which you are eligible, then apply.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses
AP courses are rigorous and demanding college-level courses taught to
high school students. Students may be eligible to earn college credits by the scores they
obtain on the
national AP exams governed by Educational Testing Service.
Playing Collegiate Sports
Official NCAA Eligibility Requirements
Students who want to participate in Division I & II sports must register with the NCAA
Clearinghouse at the end of their junior year.
