Steps to Finding a Part Time Job:

No one is good enough to just show up. Be prepared. It tells an employer you care.

  1. What type of work and where do you want to work?

  2. Call the business you are interested in working at.  Ask for the manager's name. Ask for a good time to go and get an application.

  3. Go and get an application during a convenient time for the business. (For example, do not go to a fast food restaurant at noon and ask for an application.) Dress appropriately when you pick up the application. A first impression is crucial! Be polite. Dress well.

  4. Complete the application with care. Read all directions. Use blue or black ink as specified. Write legibly. Answer all questions, if even with a "none" response or a "N/A" response.  It is usually a good idea to bring a work history (complete with names, dates, addresses and phone numbers), as well as a pen with which to complete your application. You can also leave with your application and complete it at home.

  5. Give your application to the manager. Ask for a good time to call and determine the status of your application.

  6. Call back and ask about your application.  Ask for an interview.

  7. Bring an ID as well as your birth certificate or social security card the first day of work so that your employer can determine if you are a natural citizen (I-9 form) and can complete paperwork. (W-4, tells the employer how much tax to deduct. Go ahead and list 1 deduction so that you will get a return in April rather than risk paying taxes.)

Who you are is more important than what you know!!! Most businesses want a kind, responsible, hard working, honest, intelligent employee.  You can know virtually nothing about the job and be trained, if you are a kind, responsible, hard working, honest, intelligent, employee.

Every job is a bridge to the next. You build a career by performing well at every opportunity. Be the kind of employee that bosses hate to lose, but are happy for you when you move on and are willing to help you do so.
