"Dancing as a part of the Southeast Raleigh High School has been an experience unlike any other. The program here is centered around new and different things, our performances are like nothing you have seen before. If you are interested in dance or any type of performing arts, then Southeast is the place to be. The program is centered around students and around excelling as an individual and as a group." - Rhea G.

The Southeast Raleigh Dance Department continues in its evolution of excellence under the direction of Ms. Lisa Wilder. The students have traveled to New York Fall 2004 to take master classes at the world renowned "Alvin Ailey School", and "Steps on Broadway". The department shined in the 2005 Pieces of Gold performance of "For My Country", a tribute to the brave men and women that serve our country. They were also selected to perform at the 2005 North Carolina Association of Athletics, Physical Education Health, Recreation and Dance Showcase.

Southeast dance students were selected by the world renowned Chuck David, Founder of the African-American Dance ensemble, to perform in "Home Season" at Meredith College this fall.

The years to come promise to be even more exciting. The students will experience movement from many areas of dance such as Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern African and Dance History. Artists from the surrounding area and abroad will be summoned to teach master classes.

The Department has two performance groups and Dance Lab that meets after school. Dance at the high school level provides the students with the opportunity to devote part of their school day to the formal study of dance and foster creative expression.

Performance is Sharing the Arts

The Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School has two performance groups and Dance Lab.

The Dance Company performs at all Southeast functions, musicals and festivals. Dance Company as well as the entire department conducts a Youth Dance Clinic in the fall and spring to expose younger children in the community to dance as positive expression. The Touring Dance Company is called "SOLE" (Sold On Lasting Expression). This group takes the show on the road. They perform in public schools, universities, and community functions. The performances are designed for each audience. The students are serious about their craft and enjoy sharing it with others. We would like to add you to our touring schedule. Email Ms. Wilder at lwilder@wcpss.net for more information. SRMHS Dance Company and "SOLE" are designed to provide a professional performance experience for the students and to share the wonderful world of dance with the community.

Dance Lab is designed for students that cannot take class during the school day and for those who need extra training. Dance Lab students perform in the spring semester.

The Performing Arts department works together in a community spirit, bringing all areas together as one unit, whether it be dance, band, chorus or drama. Students are motivated by the competitions and festivals and by the success of their peers in all levels of the performing arts. They learn skills and have many opportunities that afford them a well-rounded high school experience.
