About
Magnet Theme
The mission of Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School is accomplished through a leadership and technology focus. These are our magnet themes and our school's heritage. We are preparing students for a vastly different world shaped by technology and requiring significantly different skills. Where the much-ballyhooed phrase of "21st Century Skills" is bandied about by nearly every educational institution today, SRMHS has been quietly preparing our students for a future that already makes the phrase seem trite. We prefer to talk about "Future Skills", believing that no esteemed prognosticator or self-proclaimed expert institution can begin to define exactly what skills constitute 21st Century Skills . More than a discrete set of skills, we believe that Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School instills an attitude of flexibility, an eagerness and excitement about meeting the future with an open mind and the confidence to solve whatever challenges and problems arise.
We believe, as did Albert Einstein, that the significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them. Students leaving SRMHS will be prepared to provide leadership in solving the problems they will encounter. Through unique opportunities such as iLead21, iSchool/New Tech classes and Civil Air Patrol they will learn:
- Goal setting
- Ethical behavior
- Effective communication
- Problem solving using Quality Tools
- Respect for differences
- Conflict resolution
They will work toward personal excellence through setting career goals and practicing positive habits and principles. All students are trained in Covey Principles advanced through our Academic Coaching program and have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and attitudes through the acclaimed iLead21 Progressive Leadership Development Program (focusing on vision, trust, a principle-driven life and motivation using problem-based tasks. They will apply teamwork, problem solving skills and leadership principles in:
- Academic Coach
- Career Focused Learning Communities
- Classes
- Clubs and organizations
- Athletic teams
- Community service
- School project teams
- Project-Based Learning
- Bulldog Leadership Academy
Critical to the future is the ability to understand the power of technology and to be able to use it effectively and ethically. More than simply having a school-full of techno gadgets, Southeast has a long and storied history of being educational technology entrepreneurs. Our mandate was to be the technology school in the district, and we have struggled to maintain our position as a bleeding-edge implementer of useful, efficient, advanced technology that serves the purposes of enhancing education. In order to provide a real-world experience for students in the digital arts (video editing, digital graphics, digital photography, digital music, digital journalism) we have created four state-of-the-art Apple Macintosh Labs - the most advanced and extensive in the state. In order to provide a modern, real-world workspace environment we have rolled out the only classrooms in the county (our iSchool New Tech Network Workspaces) that boast Linux-based thin-client desktop virtualization. This gives our students unique exposure to multiple platforms throughout the school while still having the entire system seamlessly integrated into our own information technology system. We are the only high school that totally, autonomously administers our school network. For more than a decade our philosophy has been to use technology as an effective tool to serve education, and our staff and students are the most technologically savvy in the county. When completing SRMHS, our graduates will be able to use technology effectively, efficiently and ethically to:
- Communicate
- Research
- Solve Problems
- Collaborate
- Acquire, validate, synthesize, manipulate, manage and present information
